Suitcases are packed for Sarita, 15, and Maya, 8, who were married the previous day to bridegrooms Hariprasad, 22, and Kishore, 13, Rajasthan, India, April 29, 2009. The ceremony took place on the Hindu holy day of Akshaya Tritiya, called Akha Teej in north India. Despite legislation forbidding child marriage in India, such as the Child Marriage Restraint Act-1929 and the much more progressive Prohibition of Child Marriage Act of 2006, marrying children off at a very tender age continues to be accepted by large sections of society.
