A day in the life of Esther Garza, a 55-year-old mother, grandmother, metastatic breast cancer patient and advocate within the Latina breast cancer community.
In 2006, at the age of 45, Esther was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, with lung metastases. She was treated with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and Tamoxifen. In 2008 she had a total hysterectomy and began treatment with Femara and now has no evidence of disease. Esther continues treatment with Femara, has made a lifestyle change regarding her nutrition, has frequent lab tests, undergoes PET scans yearly and visits her doctor twice a year. Since diagnosis, Esther continues her work with the Texas Historical Commission in Austin, and has recently become engaged with plans to marry next year.
