Add to Lightbox DownloadThe neighborhood of Phiona Mutesi, a 14-year-old chess prodigy, in Kampala, Uganda, Dec. 10, 2010. Mutesi days are spent in search of food, working at the market with her mother and dreaming of an escape from Katwe’s slums. Although she is just now learning to read, her instincts have made her a player to watch in international chess. Mutesi, a naturally talented chess player is coached by Robert Katende of Sports Outreach Ministry. The chess club meets at the Agape Church inside Katwe, the largest of eight slums in Kampala.
