American Jessica Ordenes, 40, and her surrogate Najima Vohra, 30, spend time together in Anand, India on April 12, 2007. Dr. Nayna Patel, the hospital director, currently has more than 25 women who have been implanted with embryos at her clinic. While Patel claims many of the women do this for altruistic reasons, she acknowledges that money was the primary reason these women had queued up to be surrogates; without it, the list would be short, if not nonexistent. Payment usually ranges from about $2,800 to $5,600, a fortune in a country where annual per capita income hovers around $500.
