Wombs For Rent
Add to Lightbox DownloadAmerican Jessica Ordenes, 40, gets reassurance from Rubina Mondal, 30, a surrogate who recently gave birth for an American-Korean couple in Anand, India on April 12, 2007. Dr. Nayna Patel, the hospital director, currently has more than 25 women who have been implanted with embryos at her clinic. A few have already gone through the process once and are eager for a second go-round. While Patel claims many of the women do this for altruistic reasons, she acknowledges that money was the primary reason these women had queued up to be surrogates; without it, the list would be short, if not nonexistent. Payment usually ranges from about $2,800 to $5,600, a fortune in a country where annual per capita income hovers around $500.
