Add to Lightbox DownloadRazia Vohra, 25, who is ten weeks pregnant with a Korean-American couple's second baby, rests in her home with her other children in Anand, India on April 14, 2007. Dr. Nayna Patel currently has more than 25 women who have been implanted with embryos at her clinic. A few have already gone through the process once and are eager for a second go-round. While Patel claims many of the women do this for altruistic reasons, she acknowledges that money was the primary reason these women had queued up to be surrogates; without it, the list would be short, if not nonexistent. Payment usually ranges from about $2,800 to $5,600, a fortune in a country where annual per capita income hovers around $500.
