  • (From left to right) Sebastiana Huamaní Humpre, Antolina Sayre, Elena Gamarra, Noima Huallpayunca, and Cirila Amachi Huamaní wait in line to see resident Will Galvin outside a small clinic on the outskirts of Cusco. Galvin, a Medical College of Georgia student, works with CerviCusco, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the spread of cervical cancer in Peruvian women, who have one of the highest rates of cervical cancer in the world. Although culturally rich, many women lack the financial means and geographic access to preventative healthcare enjoyed by others in more developed nations. Sadly, cervical cancer is universally preventable. <br />

  • Medical College of Georgia student Afua Akhi-Gbade asks Francisca Huamani Huamani questions regarding her medical history at a small clinic on the outskirts of Cusco, Peru. Afua volunteered for CerviCusco, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the spread of cervical cancer in Peruvian women. She was inspired to become a doctor after visiting her grandparents in Sierra Leone and seeing the need for quality healthcare.

  • Abby Wong, a student at the Medical College of Georgia, takes information from a Peruvian mother and child during outreach by CerviCusco, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the spread of cervical cancer in Peruvian women, who have one of the highest rates of cervical cancer in the world. This is disproportionately true for women who live in the isolated mountain regions of the country. Healthcare workers like Wong typically go door-to-door in villages like this one, encouraging women to come to the clinic to receive pap smears. Wong said her Spanish is minimal. “I do a lot of charades and smile a lot.”

  • Nurses at Hospital Regional Cusco prepare to take Fernando Quispe Melo, 14, downstairs for an X-ray. After the teen injured his leg, Fernando’s mother carried him three hours to the nearest clinic, where an ambulance ferried him to the hospital. By then, he had a staph infection so severe, doctors weren’t sure they could save him. But after an operation and several weeks of antibiotics, Fernando was improving. Meanwhile, his mother, Dionisia Melo Mesa, at rear, refused to leave his side.

  • After Fernando Quispe Melo fell and injured his leg, his family sought help from a traditional healer. When the teen spiked a fever, his mother traveled with him to Hospital Regional Cusco, where doctors saved his life. He would spend several weeks in the sprawling public hospital more than 100 kilometers from his home.
