Seafarers gather for a holiday event in Manila, Philippines on Dec. 2006. Working at sea is a common profession for OFWs but it has its own drawbacks including prolonged trips where the crews have not been ashore for four months because of increased international security regulations. There are more than 10 million overseas Filipinos worldwide, about 11% of the total population of the Philippines.
Each year, the Philippines sends out more than a million of its nationals to work abroad through its overseas employment program.
